Frugal Designer

I always wonder about how designer think over things.
I was once reminded that I probably could not be a designer because I am a frugal. When I go shopping, I would not buy things that I think has no contribution to productivity. I am less likely to care about how the item look. I rather buy a bulky object and serve its purpose.
The designers that I know usually has many things in their home. I always admire how nice their house look and how comfortable I feel when I entered. I want to live like it, but I am too frugal to buy things to make my house to be like it.
Well, I can certainly go to Ikea and duplicate the setting that they have in their show room, but my heart is telling me not to be a copycat.
So, what is my point here?
I am too frugal to make a nice living environment, but at the same time I am pursuing to live in a house with my own style.
